94What is ASCII Art?
ASCII Art is the use of keyboard characters to create text based art.
There are 95 printable characters defined by the ASCII Standard which are used to create these images. The typewriter style font "fixed width" such as Courier New is used. So each character and space is exactly the same. eg: M's take up as much space as i's. The main reason ASCII art developed was because early printers lacked the ability to print graphics.
ASCII art can be created with any text editor, such as Notepad.
ASCII art in its simplest form can be seen in emoticons, or 'smileys'. A smile :) Sadness :( Anger >:| A sly wink ;)
If with a few characters on one line what can be achieved is quite remarkable. More complex examples can be made with using several lines of text. Or whole slabs of text in the tens of thousands to create ASCII portraits.

\___\__/My ASCII Experience
In 1996 I had my first foray online, via a friends computer. I remember it too. I was so excited about being on the internet that I didn't know what I wanted to do or where I wanted to visit even with a search engine open in front of me (which might have been metacrawler.com), beckoning me to search for all the topics that interested me. My mind drew a blank though. Next time I had a few ideas of what I wanted to look up. 'jokes' were high on the agena. A guy can never have enough jokes in their mental arsenal.
It wasn't until the next year that I bought my first modem and got online from home that I started to find some really interesting sites and information. It was around this time that I discovered ASCII Art. And it become like a quasi-fetish/casual-obsession. Maybe because I used to create pictures of cats on my mothers old typewriter when I was a kid using the letters M, o and Q. And I wasn't much of a cat lover either.
I would eventually go on to create some marvelous ASCII Art pictures of Star Wars related characters, vehicles and artifacts. I'd also create a site with the largest collection of detailed celebrity ASCII portraits. And during all this the numero uno creator of ASCII Art on the whole world wide web was someone named Joan Stark, the "Queen of ASCII art".

Joan G. Stark, also known by jgs, was a prolific ASCII artist in the late 90s.
Stark's first exposure to online ASCII Art was in the summer of 1995 when she found a tiny ASCII bicycle. First she started collecting the ASCII Art of others as she was fascinated by the simplicity yet detail of the creations. Within a year she began creating ASCII art of her own. This wasn't her first foray into ASCII Art as she actually started as a kid using her fathers secretary's typewriter making pictures on a sheet of paper using commas and lines.
Averaging 15 to 20 minutes on each piece. She started her own site to archive her quickly growing collection and updated it at least once a month. Not every attempt was a success, and she scrapped many in her pursuit of the perfect line-art style ASCII Art illustration.
I have republished a selection of Joan Stark's ASCII creations here, because they were hosted at Geocities. I gathered my favorite ones before Geocities closed down. No one has heard from the brilliant JGS in quite a while, and I'd hate to see her work disappear. I thought I'd also take this opportunity to expose her work and legacy to a new audience who perhaps didn't know about the illustrious past of ASCII Art and Joan's contribution to the Internet.

This is some awesome work.
I've posted a couple ASCII art objects on my blog months ago and it seems to be the highest page views are for those posts and the category. The highest keyword searches are for terms including ascii art.
Clue to LoneWolf -- get some more of these on the blog 8=)
Is Joan still around? Are these images copyrighted or are they public domain, CC or what? I wouldn't mind using some of them if I can.
Hi Lonewolf. I've got no idea where Joan is now, but she did enjoy seeing her creations used. Keep the jgs intact on the ascii image and I don't think you'll have a problem at all.

Hey Cisco, yeah I was aware of that. There's something up with this hub, I've tried several times to rearrange the capsules but when I republish it's back to the way it is now. I've contacted HP HQ to let them know of the problem and if they can fix it.

Really great art your presented in this Hub. There are ASCII art generators that generates or converts photos into ASCII art. Though, the ones made personally are the greatest!

It's amazing how much can be done with just text. But I am a little confused about the definition of ASCII. A long time ago, when I was trying to make certain symbols in my text (like the little TM used for a trademark) I found the answer in the form of a alt command (alt + 0 + 1 + 5 + 3 = ™). This little symbol was known as ASCII. According to this article it is any sort of basic text. So I'm not sure what the difference is.
ASCII : American Standard Code for Information Interchange. Basically an ASCII table converts a number to a symbol, that symbol to us mere mortals we know as text, the number is what the computer uses.
